If you’ve seen Rhianna’s dress at the Met Gala this year (2015), then you probbaly wondered who was the designer. According to Daily Mail, Guo Pei is a fashion phenomenon in China. He spent two years hand making Rhianna’s dress and today he is considered teh next big thing in a global fashion industry.
Daily Mail reports: From pizzas to omelettes, Rihanna’s canary yellow gown was the topic of many fan-created memes that quickly went viral on Twitter and Instagram following her appearance at the Met Gala. Guo Pei, the 45-year-old designer creates lavish designs for Chinese stars like Li Bingbing and Zhang Ziyi and has even been compared to prestigious couturier, Charles James, who was the subject of last year’s Costume Institute exhibit”. According to other media, the designer charges up to $500 000 for a piece that are usually hand crafted by a large crew.
Some of the designs take up to 50 000 man hours to make a dress. She uses only luxurious materials such as silk, pearls, gold to accessorise the fashion pieces. The Beijing-based designer has a mission, “she believes that it’s her responsibility to convey China’s tradition and past through her designs, as well as redefine couture in her home country”.
