Christian Dior: The History of Ups and Downs

The famous French brand history is a story of success. The company was founded by the designer Christian Dior in 1946. It was made possible with the help of a French businessman whose name was Marcel Boussac. Dior rejected his offer to develop an old brand he had offered and got a chance to establish his own one as part of Boussac’s textile business.

The first collection was presented in 1947. Officially, it was called “Huit” and “Corolle” lines, but the commentary of Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief resulted in its common name of the “New Look”. The lines featured full skirts of length lower than mid-calf and clothes that emphasized the waist. The look was so different from the wartime style that it immediately became a success. Luxurious materials and exquisite lines made Dior’s clothes desirable by aristocracy from many countries.

In 1947, Christian Dior Parfums was founded, as its first perfume, Miss Dior, was presented. One year later, the company expanded and established a department in the US. The year of 1950 saw Dior become the first to label their products. Although the move was denounced by the French Chamber of Couture, the example was soon followed by other brands. The company was developing very fast, expanding to new markets, such as Chile, the UK, Italy, Mexico, Cuba, and Australia. The first shoe line was introduced in 1953. Yet soon the fashion brand lost its leader: Christian Dior died from a heart attack in 1957.

Without its head designer, the company management simply did not know what to do and even considered shutting the business down, but Yves Saint-Laurent, who became Artistic Director, saved the Dior brand and presented collections that made him a national hero. However, the clothes he designed were too bohemian, and when he was called to join the Army, Dior management was glad to say goodbye to the young couturier. He was replaced by Marc Bohan, who maintained the classic Dior style and helped the ailing company. In 1969, Christian Dior Cosmetics was established.

It was at that moment that they began designing clothes for men – Dior Homme was introduced in 1970. 8 years later, Boussac experienced bankruptcy, and all his businesses were sold to the Willot Group. Yet it was not successful too, and another case of bankruptcy happened in 1981, so the company eventually got into the hands of its current owner – Bernard Arnault. In 1989, Gianfranco Ferré joined the team as a head designer. He brought more refinement and strictness to the Dior looks. John Galliano followed him in 1997, when the Vogue editor Anna Wintour influenced Arnault to make such a replacement. One of the most popular perfumes called ‘J’adore’ was presented in 1999.

The company was developing and expanding, opening new boutiques in many countries, including Russia, the US, etc. In 2011, the company faced a scandal, as Galliano’s anti-Semitic remarks shocked the society. He was fired, since his behavior did not correspond to the Dior values. He was also replaced by Bill Gaytten, but his collections got mixed reviews, and Raf Simons, a ‘dark horse’ few expected to see, became the new artistic director. The famous film Dior: Secret Garden – Versailles was introduced in 2012 and depicted Dior’s transition. The collection Simons has developed resembled of works made by Christian Dior. In 2016, Maria Grazia Chiuri, was appointed the creative director and holds this position now.

Since then, the company has been flourishing and opening new boutiques, and remains one of the most recognized and valued fashion brands.

How to make 1 million dollars

Right before the launch of my new time management app Time & Go, I would like to share with you a few findings about efficiency, productivity, success and financial freedom.

By Alina Reyzelman – founder of AR Lifestyle.

Hello, winner! If you are reading this post, it means you are seriously taking some action to change your life for better. Are you 25 and wondering when you are going to make your first million dollars? Or maybe you are 50 and you regret some of the choices you made in life that created a giant gap between you and a million? Good news is that it doesn’t matter what your gender, age or occupation is: there are some very simple rules in life that either lead you to financial success or set you apart far away from your million dollars. It’s never too late to get your stuff together and do something about your life. You and only you can determine when and how you make your money. If you are sitting on a sofa, drinking your beer or a glass of wine and wishing for a miracle to happen, I can tell you one thing: it will never happen. Do you want a change? Then it’s time to take some action and responsibility. If you apply very simple rules of time management, socionics and simply common sense—you will make a fortune.

  1. Find Your Passion

“One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.” Tony Robbins

Finding your passion is likely the quickest route to increase your chances of climbing a corporate ladder to CEO position or launching a successful business venture. Look at Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, or Warren Buffet: they would not be so successful without their passion for the work they do. I think that passion for finance is one of the key reasons why my husband has accomplished so much in his career. And this is exactly why I am the Vice President of Sales in an international consulting firm: I love what I do and I am good at it. So, how should one know that it’s the right job and how to unlock your full potential? My advice is to dig deep inside and find out what is your sociotype, chronotype and temperament. And I will tell you how you can do that. Carl Gustav Jung used his huge practical experience and created the theory of psychological types. It formed the basis of numerous socio-psychological theories, some of which developed into branches of psychotherapy.

I would suggest doing a test that was based on Carl Jung’s and Isabel Briggs Myers’ typology. The test is called MBTI and it can help you discover your personality type and identify your weaknesses and strengths. The test is available online; otherwise, you can check with your HR department and see if your company offers it. Once you do the test, you will also be able to see what career opportunities and job roles are most suitable for your type as well as understand communication and learning styles that are common for your personality. Socionics and theory of psychological types are widely used today for effective personal self-realization. Using socionics can help in assessing one’s potential correctly and find the best way to unlock it. As you know, we are all different: some are excellent accountants and lawyers, while others are entertaining comedians. Some people like to work in the morning and some at night. No matter what sociotype or chronotype type you are, there will be the right job for you.

  1. Learn to Invest Smart

“Money is always eager and ready to work for anyone who is ready to employ it.” (Idowu Koyenikan)

Well, what if you already have the passion and the job of your dreams? And, as we know, not all jobs have the potential to pay a million dollars a year. This is where smart investments come into play. I will tell you a story of a man who saved up enough money to invest and eventually became a millionaire. This is the story of my father-in-law, who worked for over 30 years as an electrician at a car plant. He was very cautious about his money and spending, and that’s how he saved enough money to invest. He used a couple of consultants to help him invest into different sectors and industries, and step by step he grew a pretty impressive portfolio of bonds, stocks, and real estate. It took him a few years to achieve his goal, as he was very conservative with his investments, but he did it! So, yes, it’s absolutely possible to make a million dollars if you are a hairdresser, an electrician or a plumber.

  1. Stay in Good Health

“Without health life is not life; it is only a state of languor and suffering—an image of death.” Buddha

It may sound as a cliché but it’s definitely true. Without good health, you will not make a million dollars. Health is a key ingredient in any successful venture. Without good health, you are most likely to suffer from low energy levels, chronic diseases, anxiety, physical and mental pain. I am not going to blah-blah about the importance of healthy eating, quality sleep and fitness. We all know that without a well-balanced diet and a well-rounded lifestyle, we will develop complications like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or even cancer. And when you are sick, how can you be productive and energetic? Here is a little reminder from Steve Jobs, who said the following on his death bed: “What is the most expensive bed in the world? Sick bed… You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone to bear the sickness for you. Material things lost can be found. But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost—Life. When a person goes into the operating room, he will realize that there is one book that he has yet to finish reading—Book of Healthy Life”.

  1. Learn Time Management Skills

“One always has time enough, if one will apply it well.”   Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I believe that without creating a RoadMap, you will never end up at any destination. What should one need to know how to manage time? The simple answer is that effective time management helps people stay on top of goals and tasks and, as a result, leads to achievements, accomplishments, and rewards. When you set goals for yourself and try to juggle the pressures of intensive study while applying for new jobs, good management of your time can be particularly important. All your life depends upon is your performance and how you use your time. Therefore, time management skills are strategically important. Once you know how to properly manage your time and be efficient, you will pave your way to success. This skill is not something that requires much effort because it will become a good habit, and this habit makes you the most productive when you perform different kinds of tasks. Once you conquer time management skills, you will be able to be productive at work and have more time to spend on things that you enjoy, including quality time with your family. Time management will help you succeed at home and at work.

  1. Don’t Stop Improving Yourself

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.”  Ernest Hemingway

If you want to become a millionaire, you have to constantly work on improving your knowledge, skills, and thinking processes. If you think you are great, trust me—you can be better. People tend to get into comfort zones and stop learning. And this is number one obstacle on the way to success and financial stability. When you travel the world, or learn a new skill, or become better at whatever you are passionate about—you raise above the crowd, you stand out. And don’t forget that the best investment you will ever make is investing in yourself.

Preventing Birth Defects During Pregnancy

We know that not all birth defects can be prevented. But, we also know that women can increase their chances of having a healthy baby by managing health conditions and adopting healthy behaviours before becoming pregnant. So, here are some recommendations from Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

  1. Talk to a healthcare provider about taking any medications.

We know that certain medications can cause serious birth defects if they are taken during pregnancy. For many medications taken by pregnant women, the safety has been difficult to determine. Despite the limited safety data, some medications are needed to treat serious conditions. If a woman is pregnant or planning a pregnancy, she should not stop taking medications she needs or begin taking new medications without first talking with her healthcare provider. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications and dietary or herbal products.

  1. Get 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day.

Folic acid is a B vitamin. If a woman has enough folic acid in her body at least one month before and during pregnancy, it can help prevent major birth defects of the developing brain and spine (anencephalyand spina bifida). Women can get folic acid from fortified foods or supplements, or a combination of the two, in addition to a varied diet rich in folate.

     3. Strive to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

A woman who is obese (a body mass index [BMI] of 30 or higher) before pregnancy is at a higher risk for complications during pregnancy. Obesity also increases a pregnant woman’s risk of several serious birth defects. Even if a woman is not actively planning a pregnancy, getting healthy can help boost her health and her mood. If a woman is overweight or obese, she should talk with her doctor about ways to reach a healthy weight before she gets pregnant.

  1. Avoid harmful substances.

Avoid alcohol, cigarrets and other illigal drugs at any time during pregnancy. Alcohol in a woman’s bloodstream passes to the developing baby through the umbilical cord. There is no known safe amount of alcohol use during pregnancy or while trying to get pregnant. The dangers of smoking during pregnancy include preterm birth, certain birth defects (cleft lip or cleft palate), and infant death. A woman who uses marijuana or other “street” drugs during pregnancy can have a baby who is born preterm, of low birth weight, or has other health problems, such as birth defects.

     5. Prevent infections.

Some infections that a woman can get during pregnancy can be harmful to the developing baby and can even cause birth defects. Some easy steps to prevent infections include frequent hand-washing, cooking meat until its well done, and staying away from people who have an infection.
